The Empire Releases Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan
In the lead-up to 2024 NAIDOC Week celebrations, The Empire launched their Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in support of their ongoing commitment to fostering reconciliation in Australia.
As part of the launch of the Reflect RAP, a specially commissioned digital artwork, We Are Yuree by artist Adrian Bauwens was also unveiled.
We Are Yuree, inspired by the history of First Nations peoples gathering at the Bunya Mountains, reflects the importance of performance in the exchange of cultural knowledges and identity, and is a symbol of The Empire’s commitment to the plan.
The launch of the Reflect RAP comes as plans for NAIDOC Week at The Empire are underway, with
First Nations Arts and Culture Market on Sunday, July 14 on The Empire Lawn on from 12pm to 4pm, and stunning theatrical experience From Campfire to Stage Light starring storyteller and musician David Bindi Hudson to be performed in the Armitage Centre at 3pm.
Other captivating First Nations work on The Empire’s schedule includes Wesley Enoch’s The Visitors on August 31 and Bangarra Dance Theatre’s first dedicated children’s work Waru – Journey of the Small Turtle on September 28.
The Empire General Manager, Giuliana Bonel said The Empire was committed creating a meaningful impact in support of reconciliation.
Our Reflect RAP is not just a document; it is a testament to our dedication to reconciliation in alignment with our strategic plan.
Giuliana Bonel - The Empire General Manager
“By embedding reconciliation into the core of our operations, we aim to elevate the voices of First Nations peoples and contribute to shared vision for a better future.
“The Empire is dedicated to driving forward with purpose, and our RAP will guide us in making a real, tangible impact.”
Ms Bonel thanked the Reconciliation Working Group for their tireless efforts and invaluable insights which were instrumental in shaping the Reflect RAP.
Since the release of The Empire’s Strategic Plan in 2022, and the formation of the Reconciliation Working Group, including Traditional Custodian and Artist Adrian Bauwens, Kullili, Butchulla and Wakka Wakka woman Kerry Canning, Department of Treaty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Communities and the Arts representative Daniel Hill, Board Director Janelle Fletcher, General Manager Giuliana Bonel, Programs and Engagement Manager Jeanette Wedmaier and Management Support Officer Kate Brennan, the creation of the Reflect RAP has been ongoing, building on work already completed and creating a formal framework for the future.
This framework, based on the overall themes of Relationships, Respect and Opportunities, prioritises the cultivation of meaningful engagement with First Nations communities, showcasing and promoting the stories and work of First Nations performers and storytellers.
The implementation of the Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan will be overseen by members of the Reconciliation Working Group.
