Following the debut season in Brisbane, Queensland Theatre Company brings their latest drama directly to the Empire Theatre stage on February 25.
Quartet stars four of Australia’s best known actors from stage and screen, including the much loved Andrew MacFarlane (Glitch, A Place to Call Home, Love Child, Water Rats) , as well as fellow award winning actors Christine Amor, Trevor Stuart and Toowoomba’s Kate Wilson.
Quartet takes on retirement with tenderness, grace, hope and lots of humour – but no self-pity – in what is a moving and all too truthful tale of the frustrations and fears of getting old.
Reggie, Cissy and Wilfred have been put out to pasture in a country retirement home after wowing the world. Their chief concerns are scatty Cissy’s wandering memory, flirty Wilf’s obsession with dirty talk, and gentleman Reggie’s ongoing battle to get marmalade with breakfast.
The serenity of their rehearsal room is shattered by the arrival of Jean: diva, celebrated soprano, fourth member of their old quartet and Reggie’s ex-wife. Can these four put aside old grudges and re-team for one more show stopping finale?
Quartet debuted in 1999 at the Albery Theatre in London and was adapted into a successful film in 2012 by director Dustin Hoffman starring Maggie Smith and Billy Courtenay.
