Empire WILL ROCK You Next Week

The irony that rock band Queen have a song titled “The Show Must Go On” is not lost on the talented cast and crew of You Will Rock You which opens at the Empire Theatre on Friday March 18.

We Will Rock You is the Empire Theatres’ major community production for 2022.  Since it’s reopening in 1997, it has been the aim of Empire Theatres Pty Ltd to host an annual major production to provide opportunities for local actors, singers, musicians and dancers to work with a professional production team to extend their performance experience in the arts.

But staging this award winning musical that ran for 12 years in the famed West End in London, has been challenging, firstly with the COVID pandemic, and now the tragic rain bomb event that has descended upon south east Queensland and Northern New South Wales.

As a community production, cast and crew give up their time to ensure the show razzles and dazzles by the time it comes to life on the Empire Theatre stage for its six performance season March 18 to March 26.

This effort includes full day rehearsals on Saturdays and Sundays, and part day rehearsals on Mondays and Tuesdays.  And their time commitment also includes travel as many cast and crew are based outside of Toowoomba as they pursue their respective careers.

During the past months COVID continually hindered We Will Rock You rehearsals as cast members either contracted the virus or were close contacts and forced into isolation, seemingly giving life to the Queen song featured in the musical, “Another One Bites The Dust” week after week.

And then the rain bomb event forced further disruption as members of cast and crew were stranded behind flood waters.

But the show will go on with all involved confident and determined to present six unforgotten performances driven by their mantra which is the name of the show itself – We Will Rock You.

We Will Rock You is a jukebox musical based on the music of Queen with a book by Ben Elton.

(The book is the script, the narrative structure that keeps the score from being nothing more than a disjointed medley of songs.)

Elton fashioned this hilarious futurist comedy around more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hit songs including We Are The Champions, Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, Don’t Stop Me Now, Under Pressure, Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust and of course, We Will Rock You.

We Will Rock You takes place in a future age on a planet once called Earth that is now controlled by a mighty corporation with an evil CEO named Killer Queen.  Rock music is unheard and all musical instruments are banned, similar in theme to how dancing was banned in Footloose. The hope of breaking free, fighting for the expression of individualism and music, rests with an unlikely resistance - an alliance of rebel Bohemians who in many ways, embody the spirit of the man who was Queen front man Freddy Mercury.

Do yourself a favour and come on a journey with We Will Rock You and escape for a night – or a Sunday March 20 2.00pm matinee – from the uneasiness of 2022 thus far.

And remember by supporting this community production of We Will Rock You you are not only supporting Empire Theatres and the hard working artists and crew but also the community at large including eateries and accommodation staff and owners, taxis and uber drivers, and retail.
