The efforts of the Friends of the Empire Theatre will be celebrated this week with National Volunteer Week from May 21-27.
While well known as the famous ushers and ticket-takers in the theatre, the Friends are a large organization responsible for performing many functions throughout the Empire Theatre, including catering and assisting staff.
Friends of the Empire Theatre President, Col Muller said to date there were close to 400 members who were all proud ambassadors for the Empire Theatre.
“The motivation behind our members varies, but I think the common reason is the desire the be part of a community icon and to offer something to its operation,” Mr Muller said.
“Initially, 20 years ago, the Friends began for the purpose of ‘making it work’, because the restored theatre was in its infancy and its survival was important to us.
“The satisfaction for me is to see the Theatre progress. I enjoy the people, staff and Friends. I enjoy the hope that my small contribution might make a difference.”
Empire Theatres General Manager, Kerry Saul said the Friends were highly valued by the Empire Theatre for everything they achieved.
“Our Friends are the smiling faces that greet our patrons, and are our community ambassadors who proudly tell everyone what a great place the Empire Theatre is and how they love to be a part of it, ” Mr Saul said.
“They are also some of the best bakers in town, with their pre-performance gift of a tin full of baked treats becoming one of the highlights of the visits of many travelling artists.
“This Volunteers Week, we thank our hard-working Friends of the Empire Theatre for their efforts and achievements.”
Social distancing measures have been put in place across the venue including queue controls. All patrons are asked to maintain the adequate distance from other guests outside their group.
Seats have been allocated to each booking group allowing adequate social distancing between each group. It is important you sit in your allocated seat.
We have increased our hygiene facilities. We have installed hand sanitising stations throughout the theatre and enhanced cleaning measures during and between shows, including high-frequency touchpoints.
Contactless payment is the preferred method of payment in both the Ticket Office and Bar Areas
All patrons are required to provide name, address, phone and email before each performance.
All staff and patrons are encouraged to monitor their own health and stay home if they are feeling unwell or have a temperature.
