Homegrown Independents Program

Homegrown Independents Program is the Empire Theatre Projects Company’s assisted hire program encouraging the development and production of new and exciting works, allowing them space to be seen and presented. Independent producers are afforded expert advice and assistance to produce their event.

The program allows for experimentation, collaboration and creative freedom and produces high quality results. It is designed to provide access, develop community capacity, support local emerging artists and develop theatre audiences by introducing them to new and local adventurous work.

Presenters apply for the program through a competitive application process and 2018’s program includes 6 productions covering drama, dance, cabaret and children’s theatre. Tickets will be available six weeks prior to the first performance of each show.

The road to fame is never easy! Follow the journey of starry-eyed hopefuls, Calista Walters, Cassie Midgley and Clarissa Foulcher, as they pursue their dream of one day making a name for themselves on the stage. This 70-minute musical theatre comedy will have you rolling in the aisles as you follow the three "wannabes" plodding through auditions, negotiating difficult directors and wondering if they are destined to always be the understudy. Who’ll be the first to find a spot on the stage and finally make it into the green room?!

Green Room Girls is an original production which showcases comedy pieces from the likes of G&S and Sondheim. It also includes the work of some of the best new musical theatre writers around (Jeanine Tesori, Heisler & Goldrich), made popular by the likes of Kristin Chenoweth, along with classical favourites such as Glitter and be Gay and Nella Fantasia. The show received rave reviews when first presented in 2017, with audience members calling it “beyond fabulous” and “highly entertaining”.
